Treatment patterns have changed from the use of mainly removable appliances to fixed appliance therapy; and from banding, to the bonding of appliances. However, it was with the introduction of ceramic bonded brackets that the horizons for adult orthodontics seriously opened up. There are a large number of male and female patients who have dental irregularities that can be corrected with these acceptable cosmetic appliances.
My private practice has seen a marked increase in the number of adults treated, such that 25% is now devoted to adult orthodontics. With the increasing reliability of adhesive dentistry, orthodontic correction of teeth, together with cosmetic restorations, veneers, bonded and Maryland retainers, have all increased the level of patient satisfaction with their appearance. Stable results can be achieved in cases of periodontal involvement.
Adult orthodontic treatment is now much more about restoring the patients pride and confidence in their appearance, rather than the individual alignment of teeth. Patients are seeking the added 'plus factor'.
